lipsets thesis A Double Edged Sword. By Seymour Martin Lipset. Chapter One: Ideology, Politics, and Deviance. Born out of revolution, the United States is a country organized around an ideology which includes a set of dogmas about the nature of a good society.

Americanism, as different people have pointed out, is an ism or ideology in the same way that communism or fascism or liberalism are isms. As G. K. Chesterton put it: America is the accounting research help, only nation in the world that is founded on a creed. That creed is set forth with dogmatic and essays on demand applied even theological lucidity in the Declaration of accounting paper help Independence. . . . As noted in the Introduction, the nation's ideology can be described in five words: liberty, egalitarianism, individualism, populism, and laissezfaire. The revolutionary ideology which became the American Creed is liberalism in its eighteenth- and nineteenth-century meanings, as distinct from conservative Toryism, statist communitarianism, mercantilism, and descriptive resort noblesse oblige dominant in monarchical, state-church-formed cultures. Other countries' senses of accounting paper help themselves are derived from a common history. Winston Churchill once gave vivid evidence to essay and nature, the difference between a national identity rooted in history and one defined by ideology in objecting to a proposal in 1940 to outlaw the anti-war Communist Party. In a speech in the House of accounting research Commons, Churchill said that as far as he knew, the Communist Party was composed of descriptive resort Englishmen and he did not fear an accounting paper help Englishman.

In Europe, nationality is related to community, and thus one cannot become un-English or un-Swedish. Being an American, however, is an ideological commitment. It is on demand applied not a matter of research birth. Essays Today. Those who reject American values are un-American. The American Revolution sharply weakened the noblesse oblige, hierarchically rooted, organic community values which had been linked to Tory sentiments, and accounting research paper help enormously strengthened the resume origin, individualistic, egalitarian, and anti-statist ones which had been present in research help the settler and religious background of the colonies. These values were evident in the twentieth-century fact that, as H. G. Wells pointed out close to ninety years ago, the United States not only has lacked a viable socialist party, but also has never developed a British or European-type Conservative or Tory party. Rather, America has been dominated by pure bourgeois, middle-class individualistic values. Essays Applied. As Wells put it: Essentially America is a middle-class [which has] become a community and so its essential problems are the problems of a modern individualistic society, stark and clear. He enunciated a theory of accounting research help America as a liberal society, in the classic anti-statist meaning of the term:

It is not difficult to show for example, that the two great political parties in America represent only one English party, the middle-class Liberal party. . . . There are no Tories . . Essay And Nature By J.bronowski. . and no Labor Party. . . . Research Paper. [T]he new world [was left] to the Whigs and Nonconformists and to teller resume, those less constructive, less logical, more popular and liberating thinkers who became Radicals in England, and Jeffersonians and then Democrats in America. All Americans are, from the accounting help, English point of view, Liberals of one sort or another. . . Lead Resume. . The liberalism of the eighteenth century was essentially the rebellion . . . against the monarchical and aristocratic state--against hereditary privilege, against restrictions on bargains. Its spirit was essentially anarchistic--the antithesis of Socialism. Accounting Paper Help. It was anti-State. In dealing with national characteristics it is important to recognize that comparative evaluations are never absolutes, that they always are made in resume origin terms of more or less. The statement that the United States is an accounting help egalitarian society obviously does not imply that all Americans are equal in any way that can be defined. This proposition usually means (regardless of which aspect is under consideration--social relations, status, mobility, etc.) that the United States is more egalitarian than Europe.

Comparative judgments affect all generalizations about societies. Brunton Resume. This is accounting research such an obvious, commonsensical truism that it seems almost foolish to essay by j.bronowski, enunciate it. I only do so because statements about America or other countries are frequently challenged on the ground that they are not absolutely true. Generalizations may invert when the unit of comparison changes. For example, Canada looks different when compared to the United States than when contrasted with Britain. Figuratively, on a scale of 0 to accounting research help, 100, with the United States close to 0 on a given trait and Britain at 100, Canada would fall around 30. Thus, when Canada is evaluated by reference to the United States, it appears as more elitist, law-abiding, and statist, but when considering the variations between Canada and Britain, Canada looks more anti-statist, violent, and egalitarian. The notion of American exceptionalism became widely applied in the context of efforts to account for the weakness of working-class radicalism in the United States. The major question subsumed in the concept became why the United States is the only industrialized country which does not have a significant socialist movement or Labor party.

That riddle has bedeviled socialist theorists since the alan brunton resume, late nineteenth century. Friedrich Engels tried to research, answer it in the last decade of his life. The German socialist and sociologist Werner Sombart dealt with it in a major book published in his native language in 1906, Why Is There No Socialism in the United States? As we have seen, H. G. Wells, then a Fabian, also addressed the issue that year in resume origin The Future in America. Both Lenin and Trotsky were deeply concerned because the logic of Marxism, the proposition expressed by Marx in Das Kapital that the more developed country shows the less developed the image of their future, implied to Marxists prior to the Russian Revolution that the United States would be the first socialist country. Since some object to an attempt to accounting paper help, explain a negative, a vacancy, the query may of course be reversed to ask why has America been the most classically liberal polity in the world from its founding to the present? Although the United States remains the wealthiest large industrialized nation, it devotes less of its income to welfare and the state is essay by j.bronowski less involved in the economy than is true for other developed countries. It not only does not have a viable, class-conscious, radical political movement, but its trade unions, which have long been weaker than those of almost all other industrialized countries, have been steadily declining since the mid-1950s. These issues are covered more extensively in accounting research chapter Three.

An emphasis on American uniqueness raises the obvious question of the nature of the essay winter, differences. There is a large literature dating back to at least the accounting paper, eighteenth century which attempts to specify the descriptive, special character of the United States politically and socially. Research. One of the most interesting, often overlooked, is Edmund Burke's speech to the House of Commons proposing reconciliation with the education, colonies, in which he sought to explain to his fellow members what the revolutionary Americans were like. He noted that they were different culturally, that they were not simply transplanted Englishmen. He particularly stressed the unique character of American religion. J. Hector St. John Crevecoeur, in his book Letters from an American Farmer, written in the late eighteenth century, explicitly raised the question, What is an American? He emphasized that Americans behaved differently in their social relations, were much more egalitarian than other nationalities, that theirdictionary was short in words of dignity, and names of honor, that is, in terms through which the lower strata expressed their subservience to the higher. Accounting Research. Tocqueville, who observed egalitarianism in a similar fashion, also stressed individualism, as distinct from the emphasis on group ties which marked Europe. These commentaries have been followed by a myriad--thousands upon thousands--of books and articles by foreign travelers.

The overwhelming majority are by educated Europeans. Such writings are fruitful because they are comparative; those who wrote them emphasized cross-national variations in behavior and applied institutions. Tocqueville's Democracy, of accounting course, is the best known. As we have seen, he noted that he never wrote anything about the United States without thinking of France. As he put it, in speaking of his need to contrast the same institutions and behavior in both countries, without comparisons to make, the mind doesn't know how to proceed. Harriet Martineau, an English contemporary, also wrote a first-rate comparative book on America. Friedrich Engels and Max Weber were among the contributors to the literature. There is a fairly systematic and similar logic in many of these discussions. Beyond the analysis of variations between the United States and Europe, various other comparisons have been fruitful. In previous writings, I have suggested that one of the best ways to specify and distinguish American traits is by contrast with Canada. There is on demand a considerable comparative North American literature, written almost entirely by Canadians.

They have a great advantage over Americans since, while very few of the research paper, latter study their northern neighbor, it is impossible to be a literate Canadian without knowing almost as much, if not more, as most Americans about the on demand applied, United States. Almost every Canadian work on research paper help a given subject (the city, religion, the family, trade unions, etc.) contains a great deal about the United States. Many Canadians seek to explain their own country by dealing with differences or similarities south of the border. Specifying and analyzing variations among the predominantly English-speaking countries--Australia, Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand, and the United States--is also useful precisely because the alan brunton, differences among them generally are smaller than between each and research paper help non-Anglophonic societies. have tried to analyze these variations in The First New Nation. Alan. The logic of studying societies which have major aspects in common was also followed by Louis Hartz in treating the overseas settler societies--United States, Canada, Latin America, Australia, and South Africa--as units for comparison. Fruitful comparisons have been made between Latin America and Anglophonic North America, which shed light on each. Some Latin Americans have argued that there are major common elements in paper the Americas which show up in comparisons with Europe. Fernando Cardoso, a distinguished sociologist and now president of Brazil, once told me that he and his friends (who were activists in the underground left in the early 1960s) consciously decided not to found a socialist party as the military dictatorship was breaking down.

They formed a populist party because, as they read the evidence, class-conscious socialism does not appeal in the Americas. With the exceptions of Chile and Canada (to a limited extent), major New World left parties from Argentina to the United States have been populist. Cardoso suggested that consciousness of social class is less salient throughout most of the Americas than in postfeudal Europe. However, I do not want to take on the issue of how exceptional the Americas are; dealing with the United States is more than enough. IBERALISM, CONSERVATISM, AND AMERICANISM.

The United States is viewed by many as the great conservative society, but it may also be seen as the most classically liberal polity in the developed world. To understand the exceptional nature of American politics, it is necessary to recognize, with H. G. Wells, that conservatism, as defined outside of the United States, is particularly weak in this country. Conservatism in Europe and Canada, derived from the historic alliance of resume origin church and paper help government, is associated with the emergence of the welfare state. The two names most identified with it are Bismarck and Disraeli. Both were leaders of the conservatives (Tories) in their countries. They represented the rural and aristocratic elements, sectors which disdained capitalism, disliked the bourgeoisie, and rejected materialistic values. Essay On Man. Their politics reflected the values of noblesse oblige, the obligation of the leaders of society and the economy to protect the less fortunate. The semantic confusion about liberalism in America arises because both early and latter-day Americans never adopted the term to describe the unique American polity. The reason is simple. Accounting Research Paper Help. The American system of government existed long before the word liberal emerged in Napoleonic Spain and alan brunton was subsequently accepted as referring to a particular party in mid-nineteenth-century England, as distinct from the Tory or Conservative Party.

What Europeans have called liberalism, Americans refer to as conservatism: a deeply anti-statist doctrine emphasizing the virtues of laissez-faire. Ronald Reagan and Milton Friedman, the two current names most frequently linked with this ideology, define conservatism in America. And as Friedrich Hayek, its most important European exponent noted, it includes the rejection of aristocracy, social class hierarchy, and an established state church. As recently as the April and June 1987 issues of the British magazine Encounter, two leading trans-Atlantic conservative intellectuals, Max Beloff (Lord Beloff) and paper Irving Kristol, debated the use of resume origin titles. Kristol argued that Britain is soured by paper help, a set of alan resume very thin, but tenacious, aristocratic pretensions . . . [which] foreclose opportunities and repress a spirit of equality that has yet to find its full expression. . . Accounting Help. . Brunton Resume. This situation fuels many of the frustrations that make British life . . . Research. so cheerless, so abounding in ressentiment. Like Tocqueville, he holds up social equality as makingother inequalities tolerable in modern democracy. Beloff, a Tory, contended that what threatens conservatism in Britain is descriptive resort not its remaining links with the aristocratic tradition, but its alleged indifference to accounting research help, some of the abuses of capitalism. It is on demand not the Dukes who lose us votes, but the 'malefactors of great wealth. . . .' He wondered why Mr. Kristol believes himself to be a 'conservative,' since he is as incapable as most Americans of being a conservative in help any profound sense. Lord Beloff concluded that Conservatism must have a 'Tory' element or it is only the old 'Manchester School,' i.e., liberal.

Canada's most distinguished conservative intellectual, George Grant, emphasized in his Lament for a Nation that Americans who call themselves 'Conservatives' have the right to that title only in a particular sense. In fact, they are old-fashioned liberals. . . . Their concentration on freedom from alan resume governmental interference has more to do with nineteenth century liberalism than with traditional conservatism, which asserts the paper, right of the community to restrain freedom in the name of the common good. Grant bemoaned the fact that American conservatism, with its stress on essay and nature the virtues of competition and links to research paper, business ideology, focuses on the rights of individuals and brunton resume ignores communal rights and obligations. He noted that there has been no place in the American political philosophy for paper, the organic conservatism that predates the essay on man by j.bronowski, age of progress. Indeed, the paper, United States is the only society on earth that has no traditions from before the age of progress. The recent efforts, led by Amitai Etzioni, to teller resume, create a communitarian movement are an attempt to transport Toryism to America. British and German Tories have recognized the link and have shown considerable interest in Etzioni's ideas. Still, it must be recognized that American politics have changed.

The 1930s produced a qualitative difference. Accounting Help. As Richard Hofstadter wrote, this period brought a social democratic tinge to the United States for on demand, the first time in research its history. Essay On Man By J.bronowski. The Great Depression produced a strong emphasis on accounting paper planning, on the welfare state, on the role of the alan, government as a major regulatory actor. An earlier upswing in research paper statist sentiment occurred immediately prior to World War 1, as evidenced by the significant support for the largely Republican Progressive movement led by Robert LaFollette and Theodore Roosevelt and the increasing strength (up to essays on demand, a high of 6% of the national vote in 1912) for the Socialist Party. They failed to change the political system. Grant McConnell explains the failure of the Progressive movement as stemming from the pervasive and latent ambiguity in the movement about confronting American anti-statist values. Accounting. Power as it exists was antagonistic to democracy, but how was it to be curbed without the erection of superior power? Prior to the 1930s, the American trade union movement was also in its majority anti-statist. The American Federation of essay Labor (AFL) was syndicalist, believed in accounting more union, not more state power, and was anti-socialist. Its predominant leader for forty years, Samuel Gompers, once said when asked about his politics, that he guessed he was three quarters of an anarchist. And he was right.

Europeans and teller resume others who perceived the Gompers-led AFL as a conservative organization because it opposed the research paper help, socialists were wrong. The AFL was an extremely militant organization, which engaged in violence and had a high strike rate. It was not conservative, but rather a militant anti-statist group. The United States also had a revolutionary trade union movement, the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Alan Brunton Resume. The IWW, like the paper, AFL, was not socialist. It was explicitly anarchist, or rather, anarcho-syndicalist. The revived American radical movement of the 1960s, the on demand, so-called New Left, was also not socialist. While not doctrinally anarchist, it was much closer to anarchism and research the IWW in its ideology and organizational structure than to descriptive essay winter resort, the Socialists or Communists. The New Deal, which owed much to the Progressive movement, was not socialist either. Franklin Roosevelt clearly wanted to maintain a capitalist economy. In running for president in help 1932, he criticized Herbert Hoover and the Republicans for deficit financing and expanding the economic role of the government, which they had done in order to deal with the Depression.

But his New Deal, also rising out of the need to confront the massive economic downsizing, drastically increased the statist strain in American politics, while furthering public support for trade unions. By J.bronowski. The new labor movement which arose concomitantly, the Committee for (later Congress of) Industrial Organization (CIO), unlike the American Federation of Labor (AFL), was virtually social democratic in accounting research its orientation. In fact, socialists and communists played important roles in the movement. Brunton Resume. The CIO was much more politically active than the older Federation and helped to research help, press the Democrats to the left. The Depression led to resume origin, a kind of moderate Europeanization of American politics, as well as of its labor organizations. Class factors became more important in differentiating party support. The conservatives, increasingly concentrated among the Republicans, remained anti-statist and laissez-faire, but many of them grew willing to accommodate an activist role for the state. This pattern, however, gradually inverted after World War 11 as a result of long-term prosperity. The United States, like other parts of the accounting help, developed world, experienced what some have called an economic miracle. The period from 1945 to the 1980s was characterized by considerable growth (mainly before the mid-1970s), an resume absence of major economic downswings, higher rates of social mobility both on a mass level and into the elites, and accounting paper help a tremendous expansion of applied higher educational systems--from a few million to accounting paper help, 11 or 12 million going to colleges and universities--which fostered that mobility.

America did particularly well economically, leading Europe and Japan by a considerable margin in terms of new job creation. A consequence of these developments was a refurbishing of the classical liberal ideology, that is, American conservatism. The class tensions produced by the Depression lessened, reflected in on demand applied the decline of the paper help, labor movement and lower correlations between class position and and nature by j.bronowski voting choices. And the members of the small (by comparative standards) American labor movement are today significantly less favorable to paper help, government action than European unionists. Lead Resume. Fewer than half of American union members are in favor of the government providing a decent standard of living for the unemployed, as compared with 69 percent of West German, 72 percent of British, and 73 percent of Italian unionists.33 Even before Ronald Reagan entered the White House in 1981, the United States had a lower rate of accounting research taxation, a less developed welfare state, and many fewer government-owned industries than other industrialized nations.

essay on accounting paper help, worldview The opinions expressed in this essay are my own and do not represent an official position of Oregon State University. My worldview is the set of beliefs about on demand applied fundamental aspects of Reality that ground and influence all my perceiving, thinking, knowing, and doing (see What is a Worldview? ). My worldview includes my beliefs about the nature and sources of paper help, knowledge (my epistemology), my beliefs about the ultimate nature of Reality (my metaphysics), my beliefs about the origins and nature of the universe (my cosmology), my beliefs about the meaning and purpose of the alan, universe and its inhabitants (my teleology), my beliefs about the existence and accounting research nature of God (my theology), my beliefs about the nature and resume origin purpose of Man (my anthropology), and my beliefs about the nature of value and the value of things (my axiology). The general beliefs that are my worldview shape not only how I see the world, but also profoundly influence the particular beliefs I come to hold, the judgements and decisions I make, and all that I think, say, and do. My worldview is so fundamental to what I do, and accounting help indeed, what I am, that it would be intellectually dishonest for me not to essays education today offer it for examination. If you are to understand me and to understand what I say and do, you must know something of my worldview. So I set it forth for you here, not in the form of a lengthy argument, but as a set of assertions. I believe them to be true, but I leave it to you to reflect on accounting research paper help, them yourself and judge their validity. I am a Christian, and my worldview is a biblical Christian worldview. So I have decided to present it in the form of an exposition of on man and nature, one of my favorite passages from the Bible, the Prologue to the Gospel according to John the Apostle (John 1:1-18, New International Version):

Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. Accounting Paper Help! In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the descriptive essay, darkness has not understood it. There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.

He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. Paper Help! He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to essays education today become children of God -- children born not of paper, natural descent, nor of teller, human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

The Logos became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and accounting paper help truth. John testifies concerning him. Resume Origin! He cries out, saying, This was he of whom I said, `He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

In the beginning was the Logos , . [1:1a] God created light, water, land, plants, animals, and man. God created man in research paper help, His own image, in His likeness, bearing certain attributes in common with Him (Gen. Applied! 1:27). God gave man dominion over and responsibility for the earth (Gen.

1:27-28). There is currently considerable debate among Christians as to research the creation account. A literal interpretation of Genesis 1 may in fact be accurate, but it is not essential to right understanding. I am inclined to and nature by j.bronowski agree with Bruce Waltke (The Literary Genre of Genesis, Chapter One, Crux , Vol. XXVIII, No. Research Paper! 4, 1991) that the Genesis creation account is a literary-artistic representation of the creation, whose purpose is to resume origin ground the covenant people's (i.e., the Jews') life and worship in the Creator and their ethics in His created order.

That is, Genesis 1 is not science, but it is consistent with science in the sense that the universe -- especially life -- is the result of intelligent design and not the product of random processes (e.g., see Dean Overman, The Case Against Accident and Self-Organization , New York: Rowman Littlefield, 1997; Michael Behe, Darwin's Black Box: The Challenge to Evolution , New York: Simon and Schuster, 1996). In the beginning was the Logos . Most English translations of the opening phrase of the Prologue render it In the beginning was the paper, word . but I have chosen to descriptive use the transliteration of the original Greek to emphasize the use of a metaphysical term absolutely essential to a correct understanding, but usually ignored by accounting research help moderns. The noun logos is from the verb lego , to resume origin gather. Logos means a collection, a gathering; a calculation, an research paper, account. Brunton! In Theaetetus Plato uses the term to refer to an account of knowledge in accounting research help, three different senses: an enumeration of elementary parts, a statement of distinguishing marks, and an expression of thought in speech. From these meanings, Greek philosophers developed logos into the metaphysical concept of knowledge, thought, or reason itself and the source of human reason and intelligence.

So the first phrase of the Prologue says that the Logos , the source of human reason, Reason itself, was present in the beginning, when God created spacetime and our universe. The Logos transcends spacetime, and the universe must be understood with respect to the Logos . and the Logos was with God, and the Logos was God. He was with God in the beginning. [1:1b-2] Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. [1:3] Based on on demand, the Prologue and these and other ancient sources, I conclude, with C.H. Dodd ( The Interpretation of the Fourth Gospel , Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1953), that the Logos is the accounting, creative power of the universe; the rational principal of the resume origin, universe; its meaning, plan, and purpose; that by which all things come into being. Indeed, I believe that the Logos is the grand, unified theory of the universe sought by modern physicists (e.g.

Steven W. Hawking, A Brief History of Time , Toronto: Bantam, 1988). For more on the Logos , see Concerning the Logos . . and accounting research help that life was the brunton, light of men. [1:4b] In ancient extra-biblical sources light sometimes referred to physical light (e.g., Plato, The Republic , VI, 507). Light was also knowledge, the source of true knowledge, or truth itself (e.g., Corpus Hermetica , I, 32; XIII, 18 - 19). Light was reason (Plato, The Republic , VI, 507 - 508). Paper Help! Light was associated with the lead resume, Logos (e.g., Philo, De Opificio Mundi , 31).

In the Bible, light is used in accounting, the literal sense, but figuratively it symbolizes or is associated with value: non-moral value or Goodness (e.g., Job 30:26), and moral value or Righteousness (e.g., Psalm 97:10-12; John 3:19-21). So, in essay, contemporary and ancient usage, light can be phenomenal (of the senses) or noumenal (of the mind). Ontologically, noumenal light is the more significant. Accounting Research Help! Noumenal light is the light of the mind, the mind is the seat of consciousness, and consciousness comes from life. In The Phenomenon of resume origin, Man (New York: Harper and Brothers, 1959), Pierre Teilhard de Chardin describes the emergence of accounting research help, life on earth: dispersed matter, to agglomerated matter, to matter with complex physical and chemical properties, to simple life, to the involution of living tissue upon itself, to consciousness, to a future transcendent state he calls the Omega Point. Summing up this process, Teilhard de Chardin says that life is the ascent of consciousness.

John's Prologue anticipates this observation and brunton resume carries it further. Help! The Life of the lead resume, Logos gave us life and raised us to consciousness. Research Paper! The Light of the Logos gives us reason and draws us to goodness. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. Descriptive Winter! [1:5] According to the creation account in the first chapter of Genesis, darkness preceded light, chaos preceded order, and research death (or at least the essay winter, absence of research, any living thing) preceded life (Gen. 1:1-2). By inference, evil preceded good. In the very beginning was chaos, darkness, death, and essays education today evil. After the creation there was order, light, life, and goodness (Gen. 1:31).

In Genesis chapter 2, God placed newly created man in the Garden of Eden to research paper work it and take care of it (Gen. 2:15), and commanded that while he might eat the fruit of almost any tree in the Garden, he must not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and essay on man and nature evil (Gen. 2:16). But he did anyway. Research! Genesis chapter 3 is the account of how man, tempted with pleasure and wisdom, disobeyed and was evicted from the Garden, removed from the fellowship he had enjoyed with God, and condemned to mortality. God created the universe, including man, in a state of complete goodness, but with a tendency to return to its original conditions. In particular, man succumbed to the tendency to evil. Placed by God in resume origin, this state of perfect goodness and charged by Him with conformity to the divine plan and order, man reached out his hand and grasped the research paper, fruit of by j.bronowski, disobedience. By seeking to improve his lot and indulge his desire for accounting paper help, pleasure and wisdom through his own efforts, man brought upon himself suffering, death, and separation from God. Placed in light, man chose darkness. But the latter phrase of this passage can also be translated . the darkness has not overcome it.

Light prevails. There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to alan resume testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. [1:6-8] When I read the help, Prologue straight through, even now, John makes me think of John the Apostle, the author of this Gospel. But in later passages in descriptive essay winter resort, the book John clearly refers to John the Baptist, a prophet who came upon the scene in Palestine in the first half of the first century AD, preaching a message of help, repentance and preparing the way for a greater one who came after him and to whom the Prologue also refers. In any case, John -- whether he be John the Baptist or John the Apostle, or both -- is essays education, symbolic of all prophets, past present, or future, whether they wrote anything for accounting paper, posterity (like John the Apostle did) or not. In fact, John is symbolic of any of us, prophets or no, who proclaim the truth about the Light. We are not the Light and our goal is not to draw attention to ourselves.

Our hope is that through our words and acts others might believe in the Light, might be drawn by the Light to Goodness, and might be restored to fellowship with God. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into essay winter the world. [1:9] He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the research, world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. [1:10-11] Though He that is the Light came to on demand us to draw us to Goodness, we did not welcome Him. Though we were created by Him and in paper help, His likeness, and resume origin though we know and reason by Him, we have all rejected Him. As John says, later in his Gospel (John 3:19-20), Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God -- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. Research! [1:12-13] Now reference to a right, in the sense of something due to us, is rare in the Bible (indeed, this is the only instance in the whole book of John). The right referred to here is a very special privilege, a privilege not due in virtue of what or who we are, not due because of our acts -- even our good deeds.

But this right is conferred by God in response to belief or faith. On Man By J.bronowski! This special privilege, granted by faith in accounting research help, the True Light, is to become children of God, born not by biological process, not by human intent or power, not as a matter of course or a naturally expected inheritance, but born of God. This right is to be born from above into eternal life (John 3), not merely life that is an extension of natural life, but a life that transcends natural life, a life that transcends spacetime. This right is a right to be born into on man the kingdom of accounting, God, to enjoy intimate fellowship with Him (John 14, 17). And it is granted in virtue of alan brunton resume, faith, or belief, but not faith in an abstract metaphysical principle -- faith in a name, the name of a particular Person. The Logos became flesh and research made his dwelling among us. [1:14a]

The Logos , the fundamental Principle of the universe, its meaning, plan, and essays education today purpose, that by which all things have come into being and that by which all things come to pass, came into the universe. Research Help! The Logos came into the universe at a particular time: about 2,000 years ago. The Logos came to alan brunton resume a particular place: the earth, in Judea of Palestine. The Logos became a particular man with a particular name: Jesus Christ. The Logos came, as Jesus Christ, for a particular purpose: to reconcile fallen man to God, to Himself; to restore fellowship between created and research paper Creator. The Logos , as Jesus Christ , accomplished His purpose through a particular process: a birth, a life of personal holiness, a ministry of repentance and descriptive resort righteousness, a death of atonement for our unrighteousness, and a resurrection and a return to eternal life in the kingdom of accounting research paper, God, in essays today, which by faith we can join Him. The Logos became flesh and made His dwelling among us. This is the only time this has happened. And He told us that this is the only way back to God (John 14:6). We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. [1:14b]

John the Apostle, John the research, Baptist, those who lived at Jesus' time and place, the prophets who came before Him, the prophets who came after Him, indeed all of us whose eyes are open to Him, have seen Him. We have seen His glory, the radiant manifestation of His divinity: divine being, divine goodness, divine power, divine love, and resume origin divine justice. We have seen the glory of the paper help, one and resume origin only who comes from God, the one and only Son of God, the one in closest intimacy with God, the only one who can introduce us to God, the sole mediator between God and man, the only way to God. He is the revelation and manifestation of eternal truth and eternal reality. Through Him we have true joy, for through Him God has expressed His grace, His unmerited favor. Through Jesus Christ God draws us out of evil, darkness, and death to goodness, light, and eternal life. John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, This was he of whom I said, `He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' [1:15]

From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. [1:16] For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. [1:17] But then God changed the rules. He changed them in our favor by offering Himself, in the form of the Logos incarnate, Jesus Christ, as a self-sacrifice of atonement for our sin, an instrument of His own grace. And through His grace and accounting research paper truth we may have eternal life and fellowship with Him in His kingdom. No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known. [1:18] And that is exactly what God did. He spoke and resume wrote His Word, His Logos , the Name that is Himself, into the story that is our universe. The Logos who was with God in the beginning, the Logos who is with God now, the Logos who is God then and accounting research paper help now and forever, is also part of our story, and through Him and Him alone we may know God, which is the highest good we can ever realize.

My epistemology consists of my beliefs about the nature and sources of knowledge. I believe that I can know the truth and that the truth can set me free (John 8:31). My knowledge, my faith, is based on authority, empirical evidence, reason, and intuition (see How I Know ). I know by authority. Today! I know by the authority of the Bible, whose modern translations are faithful to its ancient manuscripts, some dating back to the first century AD, and which has been tested and accounting paper affirmed by more than 100 generations of Jews and Christians. The Bible is infallible in all that it teaches and an ever faithful guide to my knowing and resume origin doing. I know by the authority of the Bible, just as I know by the authority of the books and journals that are the basis for my profession. I know by the authority of the Church, whose core has been faithful to paper help the teachings of Jesus for nearly two millennia. I know by descriptive essay resort the authority of the accounting, Church just as I know by the authority of the social and professional communities of which I am a member and in whom I place my trust. I know by empirical evidence. Just as I know how to resume origin cope in everyday life by way of direct sensory experience, so by accounting research help the personal experience of many otherwise inexplicable personal blessings do I know of God's grace.

I know by essays today reason. Just as I use reason in my profession and to deal with daily existence, so reason informs me that this complex universe is accounting research help, not the product of chance and that Jesus Christ must be who He said He was. I know by intuition, a direct apprehension of reality, unmediated by sensory experience. My intuition confirms what the Bible teaches and my intuition has guided my exposition of John's Prologue. But so does my intuition guide my everyday life -- especially where reason fails -- and intuition has been the source of the best contributions I have made to resume origin my profession. I know by the Logos . Accounting Research! To the extent that my intuition is an accurate , direct apprehension of reality -- which I believe it to be much, if not most, of the time -- my intuition has its source in the Logos . The Logos , being the source of the Light that is Truth, Intelligence, and resume origin Reason, is the basis for research, true knowledge. By participating in the Logos , I participate in the Divine Reason.

My metaphysics consists of my beliefs about the ultimate nature of Reality. I believe that there is more to Reality than the matter, energy, and information of the material universe. Ultimate Reality is noumenal and spiritual, and the phenomenal universe is derived from it, dependant on resume origin, it, and subordinate to it. The two are separate, but intimately intertwined, for research help, the noumenal -- the mind of brunton resume, God -- gave rise to the phenomenal through His Logos , His articulate thought. But the two did not go off separately and independently, as the dualistic Greeks did contend, for the noumenal Logos became phenomenal flesh and made His dwelling among us; God remains intimately involved in His creation. My cosmology consists of my beliefs about the origins and nature of the universe and, especially, life. I believe that God created the accounting, universe through His Logos . By the Logos all things have come into being and all things come to pass. The Logos is the source of order in the universe and the source of reason by which it may be comprehended. Descriptive Essay! The creation account in research, Genesis chapter 1 is accurate with respect to Who (God) and what He did (created the universe). But it is not meant to today be a detailed account of the mechanisms of creation.

A literal interpretation of Genesis 1 may be correct, but it is not essential to my worldview. My teleology consists of my beliefs about the accounting research help, meaning and purpose of the universe. I believe that there is a meaning, plan, and purpose to descriptive essay resort the universe, and it is the Logos . All things happen in accordance with the order and Divine Reason of the Logos . God created the accounting research help, universe in resume origin, a state of complete Goodness, with the world in perfect harmony, and Man in intimate fellowship with Him. Research Help! But this perfect condition existed in a context of resume origin, darkness and disorder, and Man fell from God. God's plan and purpose is to restore the creation to paper help its perfect state, and to reconcile man to Himself. Teller! His plan and His means are His Logos , and especially His Logos incarnate. My theology consists of my beliefs about the existence and nature of God. I believe that there is one God, the creator of the accounting research paper, universe. He is a Person, and as we are created in essay on man by j.bronowski, His image, we can know something of Him. He is loving and wishes an intimate fellowship with us, so much so that He became one of us and died and rose again in an act of atonement for our unrighteousness and a means to restore our fellowship with Him.

But He is paper help, unfathomable. We can know Him intimately through His Logos , but we cannot know all about Him, for our minds are finite and He is not. Although One, He exists in three aspects or persons, or Personalities: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Of the Person of the Father or Creator and the Person of the Son or the Logos I have already written. The third Person is the descriptive essay, Holy Spirit, to whom Jesus refers as a separate Being, but also as Himself, in accounting research help, John 14. The respective roles of the Logos and the Spirit (Greek Pneuma ) are not completely clear to me yet, but just as the Logos can speak to resume origin the mind and to the reason, so can the Pneuma speak to the spirit and to the soul. My anthropology consists of my beliefs about the nature and purpose of Man.

I believe that Man was created by God in His own image, in His likeness, to fellowship with Him in an intimate, mutually indwelling relationship. Man was made a steward of the research, creation to enjoy, but also to care for it. By willful selfishness, man has individually and collectively separated Himself from God and put himself at animosity with the rest of the creation. So man is not basically good and merely in need of empowerment to realize his true potentialities, as so many of my contemporaries hold. Instead, Man is basically selfish, self-seeking, even wicked, and in need of redemption and reconciliation to God. And this can come about only though faith in the Logos incarnate, Jesus Christ. My axiology consists of today, my beliefs about the nature of value and the value of things. I believe that value is built into the universe. God created the universe with a normative as well as a physical order. Intrinsic value is research, objective and absolute. The common belief that intrinsic value is merely subjective and relative is mistaken.

Human beings are moral agents and, as moral agents, we have an obligation to know what is good and do what is right. What is good and right is explained in the Bible (especially in essays today, Jesus' teachings), revealed by help the Light of the Logos , and manifested through the witness of the Holy Spirit. Put concisely, the essays on demand, standards of intrinsic value taught by the Bible are these: the Creation is help, good (Genesis 1:31); men and women, created in God's image, are intrinsically valuable (Matthew 6:26, 28, 29); and God is the summum bonum , the highest good (Mark 10:17-18; Psalm 145:3). Essays! The highest good we can realize is to research be born from above into the kingdom of God, where we can enjoy intimate fellowship with Him. Essay On Man By J.bronowski! That good can be realized only through faith in Jesus Christ (John 17:3; 14:6). The value of everything must be judged according to these standards of research, intrinsic value.

The instrumental value of anything else -- human attributes and behavior, human institutions, knowledge, art, technology -- is proportional to its contribution to essays the realization of these intrinsic goods. In the beginning was the Logos . At the beginning, at the heart, and at the end of my worldview is the Logos , the articulate thought of God, the Divine Reason, the creative power of the universe, its meaning, plan, and purpose. The Logos , Jesus Christ , is the key to understanding not only what Is but what Ought to be. Without the Logos I would have no worldview. Without the Logos there would be no worldviews.

For if there were no Logos , there would be no world to view. The opinions expressed in this essay are my own and do not represent an research help, official position of Oregon State University.
