Getting started can be one of the hardest tasks in songwriting. And it’s also one of the sales cover most important because if you start well, you’ll have a lot less trouble later on. You’ll know where you’re going and you’ll have plenty of things to resume, say.
There’s always the temptation to jump right in and begin with the cover letters first thing that occurs to you. You know you want to a thesis statement is, write a song – lyrics with a melody and some chords – but you may only have a vague idea or a feeling about what you want to sales cover letters, express. When that happens you could end up with a song that listeners can’t understand or relate to. So which comes first – lyrics, melody, or chords? My answer is: None of the above. There are a lot of b pro, ways to sales cover letters, start a song and you could start with one of those, but I’m going to is, suggest that you start with THE TITLE. The title is going to be the line that everyone remembers. More important, it’s going to define the message of the song. It will be your guide, keeping your song on track and keeping listeners interested. Think of your title as the medical peak of a pyramid. The rest of the song is made up of the building blocks that support it.
Start your song with a title that appeals to you. Make sure it’s a phrase that rings true in your ears. Phd Engineering. Something that makes you say, “I’ve got to know more about that!” Because if YOU want to know, others will want to know. Keep your eyes and ears open for good titles that have energy for you. Action words, images, or short phrases make good titles. Attention-grabbing newspaper headlines are full of good titles.

GO AHEAD DO IT – Start your title list right now. Pick up a book or magazine, or scan for interesting short phrases. Write down at least three phrases. Mix and phd engineering, match words between phrases, substitute your own words, play around with ideas. Try to come up with at least one phrase that makes you want to write a song.
Keep looking for more phrases until you have something you like. Draw a big circle around that phrase. Then keep reading. ? Turn a title into a lyric. Medical Cover. Here’s how. Now, let’s begin to turn your title into a great lyric by simply asking a few questions – the questions suggested by your title. If you use these questions as a guide when writing your lyric, you’ll be able to… Finish every song you start Keep listeners with you Make your song say what you want. Ask the questions hidden in your title. Every title suggests questions that need to be answered.
Some of the questions will be ones that you want to explore, others will be questions that listeners have. Phd Engineering Resume. You’ll need to medical letters, answer both. Let me give you a few examples… Take a classic song title like “Heartbreak Hotel.” Some of the questions this title suggests are: What is a ‘heartbreak hotel’? What happens there? Where is it?
Sure enough, these questions are all answered in this great Rock standard. What is a ‘heartbreak hotel’? A place to is, go when your baby leaves you. What happens there? Brokenhearted lovers cry. Where is it? Down at the end of Lonely Street. A title like Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble” suggests questions like “Who was trouble?” “What kind of trouble?” and ‘How did things turn out?” If these questions aren’t answered in the song, listeners will go away disappointed. Here’s the medical sales letters lyric. Take a look to see how these questions were answered. In a big Country hit like “You’re Gonna Miss This” recorded by Trace Adkins, listeners will be asking “What is it we’re going to e portfolio, miss?” and “Why will we miss it?” Check out the lyric.
You might be surprised by the answer! That’s the sign of a great song. It draws the medical sales letters listener in five essay, with questions, then answers them in a fresh way. Of course, you’ll also have questions you want to write about. Exploring our own feelings and experiences is medical cover letters, a big part of what drives us to write songs. So, here are a few questions you might want to answer.
What does your title mean? How do you feel about that? Why do you think that happened? What do you hope or fear will happen next? If you’d like to hear a lyric example, listen to “Be With You,” a song I wrote with singer-songwriter Ed Patrick. The lyric answers questions suggested by the title, questions like: Why is the singer saying this?
What’s happening? Who is involved? What is the five essay on courage singer feeling? Why is it important to medical sales cover, him? Medical Cover Letters, Sample …
The Modern Essay by Virginia Woolf. Widely considered one of the finest essayists of the 20th century, Virginia Woolf composed this essay as a review of Ernest Rhys's five-volume anthology of Modern English Essays: 1870-1920 (J.M. Dent, 1922). The review originally appeared in The Times Literary Supplement , November 30, 1922, and Woolf included a slightly revised version in her first collection of essays, The Common Reader (1925). In her brief preface to the collection, Woolf distinguished the common reader (a phrase borrowed from Samuel Johnson) from the critic and scholar: He is worse educated, and nature has not gifted him so generously. He reads for his own pleasure rather than to cover impart knowledge or correct the opinions of others. Five Page. Above all, he is guided by an instinct to create for himself, out of letters, whatever odds and ends he can come by, some kind of phd engineering, whole--a portrait of a man, a sketch of an age, a theory of the sales cover, art of writing. Here, assuming the guise of the common reader, she offers a few . . . ideas and opinions about the phd engineering, nature of the English essay. Compare Woolf's thoughts on essay writing with those expressed by Maurice Hewlett in The Maypole and the Column and by Charles S. Brooks in The Writing of Essays. As Mr.
Rhys truly says, it is unnecessary to go profoundly into the history and origin of the essay--whether it derives from Socrates or Siranney the Persian--since, like all living things, its present is cover, more important than its past. Moreover, the resume, family is sales, widely spread; and while some of its representatives have risen in the world and wear their coronets with the best, others pick up a precarious living in the gutter near Fleet Street. The form, too, admits variety. The essay can be short or long, serious or trifling, about God and Spinoza, or about turtles and phd engineering Cheapside. But as we turn over the pages of cover letters, these five little volumes, containing essays written between 1870 and 1920, certain principles appear to control the booklet, chaos, and medical sales we detect in the short period under review something like the progress of history. Of all forms of literature, however, the e portfolio, essay is the one which least calls for the use of long words. The principle which controls it is simply that it should give pleasure; the desire which impels us when we take it from the shelf is simply to receive pleasure. Medical Cover Letters. Everything in an essay must be subdued to that end.
It should lay us under a spell with its first word, and we should only wake, refreshed, with its last. In the interval we may pass through the is, most various experiences of medical sales cover, amusement, surprise, interest, indignation; we may soar to the heights of fantasy with Lamb or plunge to the depths of wisdom with Bacon, but we must never be roused. The essay must lap us about and draw its curtain across the world. So great a feat is seldom accomplished, though the fault may well be as much on the reader's side as on statement, the writer's. Habit and medical sales cover lethargy have dulled his palate. A novel has a story, a poem rhyme; but what art can the essayist use in these short lengths of prose to sting us wide awake and fix us in methodology a trance which is not sleep but rather an intensification of life--a basking, with every faculty alert, in the sun of pleasure? He must know--that is the sales cover letters, first essential--how to write. His learning may be as profound as Mark Pattison's, but in an essay, it must be so fused by the magic of writing that not a fact juts out, not a dogma tears the phd engineering, surface of the texture. Macaulay in one way, Froude in another, did this superbly over and over again. They have blown more knowledge into medical cover letters us in the course of one essay than the innumerable chapters of a hundred textbooks.
But when Mark Pattison has to tell us, in the space of thirty-five little pages, about Montaigne, we feel that he had not previously assimilated M. Grun. M. Grun was a gentleman who once wrote a bad book. Resume. M. Grun and cover letters his book should have been embalmed for our perpetual delight in amber. But the process is fatiguing; it requires more time and perhaps more temper than Pattison had at b pro booklet his command. He served M. Grun up raw, and medical sales he remains a crude berry among the cooked meats, upon dr pepper essay which our teeth must grate forever. Something of the sort applies to Matthew Arnold and medical cover a certain translator of Spinoza. Resume. Literal truth-telling and medical sales cover letters finding fault with a culprit for coursework b pro forma booklet his good are out of sales cover letters, place in an essay, where everything should be for our good and rather for eternity than for the March number of the Fortnightly Review . But if the voice of the scold should never be heard in this narrow plot, there is another voice which is as a plague of locusts--the voice of a man stumbling drowsily among loose words, clutching aimlessly at vague ideas, the page essay, voice, for example, of Mr. Hutton in the following passage:
A book could take that blow, but it sinks an medical cover letters, essay. A biography in two volumes is indeed the proper depository, for e portfolio resume there, where the medical cover, licence is so much wider, and hints and glimpses of dr pepper essay, outside things make part of the feast (we refer to the old type of Victorian volume), these yawns and stretches hardly matter, and have indeed some positive value of their own. But that value, which is contributed by the reader, perhaps illicitly, in his desire to get as much into the book from all possible sources as he can, must be ruled out here. There is no room for the impurities of literature in an essay. Medical. Somehow or other, by dint of labor or bounty of nature, or both combined, the essay must be pure--pure like water or pure like wine, but pure from dullness, deadness, and essay deposits of extraneous matter.
Of all writers in the first volume, Walter Pater best achieves this arduous task, because before setting out to write his essay ('Notes on Leonardo da Vinci') he has somehow contrived to medical get his material fused. He is a learned man, but it is not knowledge of Leonardo that remains with us, but a vision, such as we get in a good novel where everything contributes to five essay bring the writer's conception as a whole before us. Only here, in the essay, where the bounds are so strict and facts have to be used in their nakedness, the medical sales letters, true writer like Walter Pater makes these limitations yield their own quality. Truth will give it authority; from its narrow limits he will get shape and political science methodology intensity; and then there is no more fitting place for some of medical cover, those ornaments which the old writers loved and we, by calling them ornaments, presumably despise. Nowadays nobody would have the dissertation, courage to embark on the once famous description of Leonardo's lady who has. learned the secrets of the grave; and has been a diver in deep seas and keeps their fallen day about her; and trafficked for strange webs with Eastern merchants; and, as Leda, was the mother of Helen of Troy, and, as Saint Anne, the mother of Mary . . . The passage is too thumb-marked to slip naturally into the context. But when we come unexpectedly upon medical sales cover letters 'the smiling of women and the motion of great waters', or upon science dissertation methodology 'full of the refinement of the medical sales letters, dead, in sad, earth-coloured raiment, set with pale stones', we suddenly remember that we have ears and we have eyes and that the dissertation methodology, English language fills a long array of stout volumes with innumerable words, many of which are of more than one syllable.
The only living Englishman who ever looks into these volumes is, of course, a gentleman of Polish extraction. But doubtless our abstention saves us much gush, much rhetoric, much high-stepping and cloud-prancing, and for the sake of the cover letters, prevailing sobriety and hard-headedness, we should be willing to barter the splendor of Sir Thomas Browne and the vigor of Swift. Yet, if the science methodology, essay admits more properly than biography or fiction of sudden boldness and metaphor, and can be polished till every atom of its surface shines, there are dangers in that too. We are soon in sight of ornament. Cover Letters. Soon the current, which is the life-blood of literature, runs slow; and instead of sparkling and flashing or moving with a quieter impulse which has a deeper excitement, words coagulate together in phd engineering frozen sprays which, like the grapes on medical sales letters, a Christmas-tree, glitter for a single night, but are dusty and garnish the day after.
The temptation to dr pepper essay decorate is great where the medical cover, theme may be of the slightest. What is there to interest another in the fact that one has enjoyed a walking tour, or has amused oneself by rambling down Cheapside and looking at the turtles in e portfolio Mr. Sweeting's shop window? Stevenson and Samuel Butler chose very different methods of exciting our interest in these domestic themes. Stevenson, of course, trimmed and polished and set out his matter in the traditional eighteenth-century form. It is sales cover, admirably done, but we cannot help feeling anxious, as the essay proceeds, lest the material may give out under the craftsman's fingers.
The ingot is dr pepper essay, so small, the manipulation so incessant. Medical Sales Cover Letters. And perhaps that is dr pepper essay, why the peroration-- To sit still and contemplate--to remember the faces of women without desire, to be pleased by the great deeds of men without envy, to be everything and everywhere in sympathy and yet content to remain where and what you are-- has the sort of insubstantiality which suggests that by the time he got to the end he had left himself nothing solid to work with. Butler adopted the very opposite method. Think your own thoughts, he seems to say, and speak them as plainly as you can. These turtles in medical cover letters the shop window which appear to leak out of their shells through heads and feet suggest a fatal faithfulness to a fixed idea. And so, striding unconcernedly from one idea to the next, we traverse a large stretch of ground; observe that a wound in the solicitor is dissertation, a very serious thing; that Mary Queen of Scots wears surgical boots and is subject to fits near the Horse Shoe in Tottenham Court Road; take it for granted that no one really cares about sales Aeschylus; and coursework b pro booklet so, with many amusing anecdotes and some profound reflections, reach the sales cover letters, peroration, which is that, as he had been told not to see more in science dissertation Cheapside than he could get into twelve pages of the Universal Review , he had better stop. And yet obviously Butler is at least as careful of our pleasure as Stevenson, and to write like oneself and call it not writing is medical sales, a much harder exercise in style than to write like Addison and call it writing well.
But, however much they differ individually, the e portfolio resume, Victorian essayists yet had something in common. Medical. They wrote at greater length than is now usual, and they wrote for a public which had not only time to sit down to its magazine seriously, but a high, if peculiarly Victorian, standard of culture by which to judge it. It was worth while to resume speak out upon serious matters in an essay; and there was nothing absurd in writing as well as one possibly could when, in a month or two, the same public which had welcomed the essay in cover a magazine would carefully read it once more in a book. But a change came from a small audience of cultivated people to a larger audience of people who were not quite so cultivated. The change was not altogether for the worse. In volume iii. we find Mr. Birrell and Mr. Beerbohm. It might even be said that there was a reversion to political the classic type and medical sales cover that the essay by losing its size and something of its sonority was approaching more nearly the essay of Addison and Lamb. At any rate, there is a great gulf between Mr. Birrell on Carlyle and the essay which one may suppose that Carlyle would have written upon phd engineering resume Mr.
Birrell. There is little similarity between A Cloud of medical sales letters, Pinafores , by Max Beerbohm, and A Cynic's Apology , by Leslie Stephen. But the essay is alive; there is no reason to despair. As the conditions change so the essayist, most sensitive of all plants to public opinion, adapts himself, and if he is good makes the best of the change, and if he is bad the worst. Mr.
Birrell is certainly good; and so we find that, though he has dropped a considerable amount of weight, his attack is much more direct and his movement more supple. But what did Mr. Beerbohm give to the essay and what did he take from it? That is a much more complicated question, for here we have an essayist who has concentrated on the work and is, without doubt, the b pro forma, prince of his profession. What Mr. Beerbohm gave was, of course, himself. This presence, which has haunted the essay fitfully from the time of Montaigne, had been in exile since the death of Charles Lamb. Matthew Arnold was never to his readers Matt, nor Walter Pater affectionately abbreviated in a thousand homes to Wat.
They gave us much, but that they did not give. Thus, sometime in the nineties, it must have surprised readers accustomed to exhortation, information, and denunciation to find themselves familiarly addressed by a voice which seemed to belong to a man no larger than themselves. He was affected by private joys and sorrows and had no gospel to medical letters preach and no learning to impart. He was himself, simply and directly, and himself he has remained. Once again we have an essayist capable of using the essayist's most proper but most dangerous and delicate tool. He has brought personality into literature, not unconsciously and impurely, but so consciously and purely that we do not know whether there is any relation between Max the essayist and resume Mr.
Beerbohm the man. We only know that the spirit of personality permeates every word that he writes. Sales Cover. The triumph is the triumph of style. Methodology. For it is only by knowing how to write that you can make use in literature of yourself; that self which, while it is essential to cover literature, is also its most dangerous antagonist. Never to page be yourself and yet always--that is the medical sales letters, problem. Some of the essayists in Mr. Rhys' collection, to be frank, have not altogether succeeded in solving it. We are nauseated by the sight of trivial personalities decomposing in the eternity of print. As talk, no doubt, it was charming, and certainly, the writer is a good fellow to a thesis meet over medical sales cover letters, a bottle of beer.
But literature is stern; it is no use being charming, virtuous or even learned and brilliant into the bargain, unless, she seems to reiterate, you fulfill her first condition--to know how to write. This art is possessed to perfection by Mr. Beerbohm. But he has not searched the dictionary for polysyllables. He has not molded firm periods or seduced our ears with intricate cadences and b pro strange melodies.
Some of his companions--Henley and sales Stevenson, for a thesis example--are momentarily more impressive. But A Cloud of Pinafores has in it that indescribable inequality, stir, and final expressiveness which belong to life and to life alone. You have not finished with it because you have read it, any more than friendship is medical sales letters, ended because it is time to part. Life wells up and alters and adds. Even things in a thesis statement is a book-case change if they are alive; we find ourselves wanting to meet them again; we find them altered.
So we look back upon essay after essay by Mr. Beerbohm, knowing that, come September or May, we shall sit down with them and talk. Yet it is true that the essayist is the most sensitive of all writers to medical sales cover public opinion. The drawing-room is the place where a great deal of reading is done nowadays, and the essays of Mr. Beerbohm lie, with an exquisite appreciation of all that the position exacts, upon resume the drawing-room table. There is no gin about; no strong tobacco; no puns, drunkenness, or insanity. Medical Cover. Ladies and gentlemen talk together, and some things, of course, are not said. But if it would be foolish to attempt to confine Mr. Beerbohm to one room, it would be still more foolish, unhappily, to make him, the artist, the man who gives us only his best, the representative of our age. There are no essays by Mr.
Beerbohm in the fourth or fifth volumes of the present collection. His age seems already a little distant, and the drawing-room table, as it recedes, begins to look rather like an altar where, once upon a time, people deposited offerings--fruit from their own orchards, gifts carved with their own hands. Now once more the conditions have changed. Forma Booklet. The public needs essays as much as ever, and perhaps even more. The demand for the light middle not exceeding fifteen hundred words, or in special cases seventeen hundred and fifty, much exceeds the supply. Where Lamb wrote one essay and Max perhaps writes two, Mr. Letters. Belloc at a thesis a rough computation produces three hundred and sixty-five.
They are very short, it is true. Yet with what dexterity the practised essayist will utilise his space--beginning as close to the top of the sheet as possible, judging precisely how far to go, when to turn, and how, without sacrificing a hair's breadth of paper, to wheel about and medical sales letters alight accurately upon the last word his editor allows! As a feat of skill, it is well worth watching. But the personality upon which Mr. Belloc, like Mr. Beerbohm, depends suffers in the process. It comes to us, not with the natural richness of the speaking voice, but strained and thin and full of mannerisms and affectations, like the voice of a man shouting through a megaphone to a crowd on a windy day. 'Little friends, my readers', he says in e portfolio the essay called 'An Unknown Country', and he goes on to tell us how-- There was a shepherd the other day at Findon Fair who had come from the east by Lewes with sheep, and who had in his eyes that reminiscence of horizons which makes the eyes of shepherds and medical sales cover letters of mountaineers different from the eyes of e portfolio resume, other men. . Cover. . . I went with him to hear what he had to say, for shepherds talk quite differently from other men.
Happily, this shepherd had little to say, even under the stimulus of the inevitable mug of beer, about the Unknown Country, for the only remark that he did make proves him either a minor poet, unfit for phd engineering resume the care of medical, sheep or Mr. Belloc himself masquerading with a fountain pen. That is the penalty which the habitual essayist must now be prepared to face. He must masquerade. He cannot afford the time either to be himself or to be other people. He must skim the surface of thought and dilute the strength of personality. He must give us a worn weekly halfpenny instead of a solid sovereign once a year.
But it is not Mr. Belloc only who has suffered from the prevailing conditions. The essays which bring the collection to the year 1920 may not be the best of their authors' work, but, if we except writers like Mr. Conrad and Mr. Statement Is. Hudson, who have strayed into essay writing accidentally, and concentrate upon those who write essays habitually, we shall find them a good deal affected by the change in their circumstances. Medical Sales Letters. To write weekly, to write daily, to write shortly, to write for busy people catching trains in the morning or for tired people coming home in the evening, is a heartbreaking task for men who know good writing from bad. They do it, but instinctively draw out of harm's way anything precious that might be damaged by contact with the public, or anything sharp that might irritate its skin. And so, if one reads Mr.
Lucas, Mr. Essay On Courage. Lynd, or Mr. Squire in the bulk, one feels that a common grayness silvers everything. They are as far removed from the extravagant beauty of Walter Pater as they are from the intemperate candor of Leslie Stephen. Beauty and medical sales cover letters courage are dangerous spirits to bottle in a column and a half; and thought, like a brown paper parcel in a waistcoat pocket, has a way of spoiling the symmetry of an article. It is a kind, tired, apathetic world for which they write, and the marvel is that they never cease to attempt, at least, to write well. But there is no need to pity Mr. Is. Clutton Brock for cover this change in the essayist's conditions. He has clearly made the resume, best of his circumstances and not the worst. One hesitates even to say that he has had to make any conscious effort in medical cover letters the matter, so naturally, has he effected the transition from the private essayist to the public, from the drawing-room to the Albert Hall.
Paradoxically enough, the shrinkage in size has brought about a corresponding expansion of individuality. A Thesis Statement Is. We have no longer the 'I' of Max and of Lamb, but the 'we' of public bodies and other sublime personages. It is 'we' who go to hear the cover letters, Magic Flute; 'we' who ought to profit by it; 'we', in some mysterious way, who, in our corporate capacity, once upon a time actually wrote it. For music and literature and art must submit to the same generalization or they will not carry to the farthest recesses of the Albert Hall. That the voice of Mr.
Clutton Brock, so sincere and so disinterested, carries such a distance and reaches so many without pandering to the weakness of the mass or its passions must be a matter of legitimate satisfaction to us all. But while 'we' are gratified, 'I', that unruly partner in the human fellowship, is reduced to despair. 'I' must always think things for himself, and feel things for phd engineering himself. To share them in a diluted form with the majority of cover letters, well-educated and well-intentioned men and women is for him sheer agony; and while the rest of us listen intently and profit profoundly, 'I' slips off to e portfolio the woods and the fields and rejoices in a single blade of grass or a solitary potato. In the fifth volume of modern essays, it seems, we have got some way from pleasure and the art of medical sales cover, writing. But in dissertation methodology justice to the essayists of 1920 we must be sure that we are not praising the famous because they have been praised already and the dead because we shall never meet them wearing spats in Piccadilly. We must know what we mean when we say that they can write and give us pleasure.
We must compare them; we must bring out the quality. We must point to this and say it is good because it is exact, truthful, and imaginative: Nay, retire men cannot when they would; neither will they, when it were Reason; but are impatient of Privateness, even in age and medical cover sickness, which require the shadow: like old Townsmen: that will still be sitting at their street door, though therby they offer Age to Scorn . . . and to this, and say it is bad because it is phd engineering resume, loose, plausible, and commonplace: With courteous and precise cynicism on his lips, he thought of medical sales, quiet virginal chambers, of waters singing under the moon, of terraces where taintless music sobbed into the open night, of pure maternal mistresses with protecting arms and vigilant eyes, of fields slumbering in forma booklet the sunlight, of leagues of ocean heaving under warm tremulous heavens, of hot ports, gorgeous and medical sales cover perfumed. . . Page Essay. . It goes on, but already we are bemused with sound and neither feel nor hear. The comparison makes us suspect that the art of medical cover, writing has for backbone some fierce attachment to an idea. It is on the back of an idea, something believed in with conviction or seen with precision and thus compelling words to dr pepper essay its shape, that the diverse company which includes Lamb and Bacon, and Mr. Beerbohm and cover letters Hudson, and Vernon Lee and Mr. Conrad, and Leslie Stephen and science dissertation methodology Butler and Walter Pater reaches the medical sales cover, farther shore. Very various talents have helped or hindered the dr pepper essay, passage of the idea into medical cover words. Some scrape through painfully; others fly with every wind favouring.
But Mr. Belloc and a thesis statement is Mr. Lucas and sales letters Mr. Squire are not fiercely attached to anything in itself. Dr Pepper Essay. They share the contemporary dilemma--that lack of an sales, obstinate conviction which lifts ephemeral sounds through the misty sphere of anybody's language to the land where there is a perpetual marriage, a perpetual union.
Vague as all definitions are, a good essay must have this permanent quality about it; it must draw its curtain round us, but it must be a curtain that shuts us in, not out.

Medical Sales & Medical …
esl cheater essay frequency, methods, and causes. Mikaela Bj?rklund and medical sales cover letters, Claes-G?ran Wenestam. ?bo Akademi University. Department of Teacher Education, email: Mikaela.Bjorklund@abo.fi or email@example.com. Paper presented at the European Conference on e portfolio Educational Research, Lahti, Finland 22-25 September 1999. During the past decades cheating among undergraduate students has been a well-known problem difficult to gain knowledge of. European research in this field of research is scarce. The aim of medical sales cover this paper is to present a study, investigating the frequency of cheating, the cheating methods used and the students#146; motives for cheating or not cheating in a Swedish-Finnish university context. Comparisons with other higher education contexts were possible since an anonymous questionnaire, worked out and used by statement, Newstead, Franklyn-Stokes and Armstead (1995), was translated into Swedish and used in cover the study. The participants were three groups of university students (n=160) from coursework b pro, different academic disciplines. The findings implicate that cheating among undergraduates is sales cover letters common and mainly is a problem of ethic character.
The paper also discusses consequences of student cheating for the university staff, legislators, and society. Suggestions on what measures should be applied are presented along with suggestions for further research in this area. During the past decade, problems concerning cheating among undergraduate students have become increasingly apparent in academic institutions in the Nordic countries. Cheating or academic misconduct is, however, not a new phenomenon, but a well-known problem in many European countries, as well as in science methodology the United States of America. Because of the ethical and moral character of the problem it is not easy to do research in this field. Obvious problems are i.e. student integrity. Thus, academic dishonest behaviour and cheating is medical letters a familiar problem for any university, but it is often not very well known and sometimes the university authorities do not even want to statement know of it. Keith-Spiegel (in Murray, 1996) shows that among a sample of almost 500 university professors 20 percent reported they had ignored to take further measures in evident cases of cheating. Medical Letters! Many university teachers obviously hesitate to take action against cheating behaviour because of the stress and discomfort that follows (Murray, 1996).
Also Maramark and Maline (1993) suggest that faculty often choose not to involve university or departmental authorities but handle observed cheating on an individual level, making it invisible in university documents and, thus, unknown to the university authorities. Also other findings support the reluctance to bring dishonest academic behaviour like cheating before the university administration. Statement! Jendreck (1992), as an example, concludes that students preferred to handle the problem informally rather than by using formal university policy. Medical Sales! Probably at least partly because of the reasons mentioned above European research in this field is still scarce (cf. Newstead, Franklyn-Stokes Armstead, 1995 and Ashworth et al., 1997). Nevertheless, we feel that it is phd engineering resume of the utmost importance that this area of research is further developed in the near future, not the least since students tend to see cheating as a more or less normal part of their studies, which is illustrated in the quote below: Students beliefs that everyone cheats (Houston, 1976, p. 301) or that cheating is a normal part of life (Baird, 1980) encourage cheating.
The adage cheaters never win may not apply in the case of academic dishonesty. With cheating rates as high as 75% to 87% (e.g., Baird, 1980; Jendreck, 1989) and detection rates as low as 1.30% (Haines et al., 1986), academic dishonesty is reinforced, not punished. (Davis, Grover, Becker McGregor, 1992, p. 17) With detection rates as low as 1,3 % it is hardly surprising that students to a great extent perceive academic misconduct as worth while and even approved of. As an illustration of the low detection rates; during a five year period (1991-1995) only medical sales 24 students were brought to a thesis the disciplinary board for cheating at one Swedish university (Grahnstr?m, 1996). It is, hence, of sales letters importance to university staff and administrators, as well as to legislators and society as a whole to gain insight in this matter, in order to be able to phd engineering do something about it. The aim of the study. The main aim of the cover study presented in phd engineering this paper is to provide a first step in sales a survey over university students#146; cheating, i.e. to investigate the overall frequency, different methods and main reasons for cheating and not cheating among students in a Finnish context. The study is intended as a starting point for further in-depth research in this area.
In order to get a better understanding of the problem, the aim is a thesis also to letters relate the outcome to subjects#146; backgrounds in terms of e portfolio resume sex, age, academic experience (number of study years), faculty belongings, level of difficulty, level of study success and main reason for study at the university, in order to get a deeper understanding of medical sales student cheating behaviour. To make comparisons with other contexts possible an anonymous questionnaire, worked out and used by dr pepper essay, the British researchers Newstead , Franklyn-Stoked and Armstead (1995), was translated into Swedish and used in the study, which was carried out on 160 university students during the spring of 1996. I this presentation we focus attention on: a) the frequency of sales cover admitted cheating, b) what kinds of cheating is political dissertation methodology most frequent in relation to the British results, b) the relationship between frequency of admitted cheating/not admitted cheating and sex, c) the reasons selected for or against cheating in relation to the British results, and. d) the relationship between the reasons selected and cover, sex. It is very human to try to dr pepper essay find ways to solve problems as easy as possible or to avoid unnecessary difficulties. Sometimes a creative mood is not only wanted but also morally supported, but in other situations it is considered as dishonest and shameful. In higher education this kind of creativity may be in conflict with study performance and medical, productivity and may turn out to be viewed upon with disapproval or contempt. How define cheating?
Plagiarism related to the exam situation is what is five page essay on courage usually referred to when generally talking about cheating. It is also this kind of behaviour that has received most attention in research on cheating. Defining cheating is, however, much more complicated than that, since cheating seems to involve both a moral and an achievement dimension, which is graphically illustrated in Figure 1 below. Figure 1. Graphic presentation of the problematic grey-zone between moral and medical, immoral behaviour. The levels in the achievement dimension are not absolute, but dependent on the perspective of the viewer. The area between the dashed lines symbolises the dr pepper essay grey-zone that exists concerning the classification of sales potential cheating behaviours. Definitions of e portfolio cheating also vary as a result of variation in moral development, experiences of studies, influence of significant others, studying strategy (cf. Cover Letters! Miller Parlett, 1973) and probably also other factors. The result is science dissertation a wide spectrum of definitions ranging from medical, liberal to conservative. Hence, the need for normative documents is apparent.
Evenso they do not seem to exist, at least not in Finland. Nowhere in the legislation concerning exams and cheating is it mentioned what kind of e portfolio behaviours constitutes cheating. The examples above illustrate what a complex problem cheating is. In the sales cover letters study presented in this paper all not strictly correct behaviours were classified as cheating for clarity#146;s sake. To what extent does cheating occur? Most of the research done concerning the amount of cheating occurring, has, as mentioned earlier, been carried out in the USA. Phd Engineering Resume! The quotation below provides examples of the cheating-rates measured in different studies in a North American context. Medical Letters! The reader ought to observe that these studies were different in design; concentrated on different behaviours and therefore some of the variation in the percentages might be accounted for in that way, and thus can not only page essay be taken to cover convey a steadily increasing rate of cheating. Drake (1941) reported a cheating rate of 23%, whereas Goldsen, Rosenberg, William, and Suchman (1960) reported rates of 38% and b pro forma, 49% for 1952 and 1960, respectively. Hetherington and Feldman (1964) and Baird (1980) reported cheating rates of 64% and 76%, respectively. Jendreck (1989) placed the typical rate between 40% and 60% but noted other rates as high as 82% (Stern Havlicek, 1986) and medical cover letters, 88% (Sierles, Hendrickx, Circle, 1980). (Davis et al., 1992,s.16)
Davis et al. (1992), pointing at the results presented above, regard cheating as epidemic. There are indications that give some, but not very much, support to the epidemic theory. McCabe and Trevino (1996) found that the a thesis statement tendency to cheat had increased only little, from 63 percent in 1963 to 70 percent in 1990-91 but that the cheating methods had been more developed and the repertoire wider. Their findings may also be interpreted to mean that students who cheat are doing it more often than previous generations of students. Three studies cited by Maramark and Maline (1993) suggest that cheating is a constant study technique among large groups of students (60-75 percent). Also Davis and Ludvigson (1995) found in a more recent study that the individuals who cheat during their university-level studies are the sales ones that also have cheated earlier in their studies.
In a study by science dissertation methodology, Baldwin, et al (1996), where 2459 medical students participated as subjects, 39 percent said they had witnessed cheating, 66,5 percent had heard about cheating, and 5 percent had cheated during their medical studies. Graham et al (1994) found that among 480 college students 89 percent admitted cheating and in medical a study by Lord and Chiodo (1995) 83 percent of the five page on courage undergraduates investigated (n=300) admitted to cheating on significant tests and major projects. In a European context Newstead et al. (1995) also present high rates of cheating. In their study only 12% of the respondents claimed that they had not cheated. All the above mentioned figures are concerned with the number of cheaters, i.e. the medical cover number of students who have at dr pepper essay least on one occasion been involved in academic misconduct, they do not tell us anything about to sales what extent these people do cheat. It is, however, likely that the more cheating is dr pepper essay done, the more probable it is that the numbers of behaviours used vary. It is therefore of importance to find out what kind of behaviours students utilise. What methods are used?
There are four major kinds of groups to be distinguished when classifying cheating behaviours, namely: Individual opportunistic, individual planned, active social and medical sales, passive social (Hetherington Feldman, 1964). Baird (1980) on the other hand distinguishes only between individual and co-operative behaviours. The findings of Franklyn-Stokes Newstead (1995) point to extensive cheating in some areas like copying each others work, changing or inventing research data, while some other cheating behaviour like lying or changing persons at examination (impersonation) was fairly scarce (see Table 5). Dr Pepper Essay! Hence, there seems to be a correlation between level of perceived seriousness of the behaviour and its frequency of occurrence #150; the more serious the behaviour, the less frequent it is. Students tend to classify exam-related cheating as more serious than course-related cheating.
These classifications were also confirmed by Newstead et al#146;s results, where all exam-related items were among the least frequent and course-related items among the most frequent. McCabe and Trevino summarise their findings in a table showing what kind of medical sales cover cheating and resume, the frequency students admit they are engaged in. The modified table (below) shows the level of admitted cheating in sales 1963 and 1993. The two tests make a comparison possible. Table. 2. Kind of admitted student cheating in 1963 and 1993 (%) (McCabe and Trevino, 1996). Copied material without footnoting. Table 2 shows that some kinds of cheating are more frequent than other kinds. It is resume also interesting to find that in most of the cases the tendency is an increase of the cheating between 1963 and 1993. This does not necessarily mean, however, that the students were cheating more in sales letters 1993 than they did in e portfolio resume 1963.
Another reasonable explanation is medical sales cover that the five page on courage students were more prone to admit cheating in 1993 than the students were in medical 1963. These results are similar to findings in other studies but there are also findings suggesting cultural differences. Kuehn, Stanwyck, and Holland , for instance, asked students from Mexican, Arabic and US cultural backgrounds about cheating. The main focus was on three typical cheating behaviours: using crib notes, copying another student#146;s test, and political science methodology, allowing another student to copy course work. The findings suggest that there were differences between the culturally different groups of students in how they looked upon and rated cheating. Also new technique, like the World Wide Web, is used by students in letters order to download papers, essays, etc produced by other students but presented to the examiner as own work. Political Dissertation! One illustration of this is medical sales cover letters a report from a Swedish university, where several students were found out using not accepted means for getting course credits among which the dr pepper essay downloading of ready-made course works from the web was mentioned (Lunds Universitet Meddelar, 1998). Considering the variety of methods used in cheating, as described above, it is probable that also the reasons given for cheating are many.
Reasons for cheating and not doing it. The reasons or motives for cheating are not very well known but must be assumed to be complex. Letters! In a North American study of school students cheating by Anderman, Griesinger, and Westerfield (1998) it is claimed that the schools#146; obsession with performance measures spurs cheating. It is suggested that classrooms that emphasise high grades and test scores may drive the students to cheat . Similar conclusions are reported from phd engineering, several investigations, where the students#146; workload is found to be an important explaining factor (Lipson MacGavern, 1993). Davis et al (1992) point out that pressures for good grades in higher education, student stress, ineffective deterrents, teacher attitudes, and an increasing lack of academic integrity are important determinants of cheating.
Baird (1980) previously reported similar findings. In that study 35 percent of the students stated that they had too little time for cover letters, studying for the exam and 26 percent of the students said their working load made it necessary to cheat. In a study by Singhal (1982) as much as 68 percent of the students regarded the wish to get good results as the reason for cheating. Newstead, Franklyn-Stokes, and Armstead (1995) found that 21 percent of the cheaters say it was lack of time to five on courage study that made them cheat and medical cover, 20 percent explicitly stated that their cheating was a consequence of their wish to get better grades. A third frequently occurring reason for cheating was everybody else does it (16%), which effectively reflects students#146; attitudes towards cheating. Dr Pepper Essay! This reason was followed by the wish to help a friend (14%) and laziness (10%), which also says quite a lot about the risks of getting caught. It is medical sales cover letters obviously easier to help a friend cheat than to e.g. help the friend learn to an exam. Also Maramark and Maline (1993), when looking for causes for cheating, found that stress, competition for jobs, scholarships and admission to political science methodology post-graduate programs were important determinants. On a general level the medical letters causes or explanations identified can be organised in two classes of factors, external, and political dissertation methodology, individual/personal.
In Table 1 below the two super-ordinate factors and some elements/reasons mentioned in research done by Baird (1980), Davis et al (1992) and Hetherington Feldman (1964) are presented. Table 1. Presentation of factors that might lead to cheating mentioned by Baird (1980), Davis et al. (1992) and Hetherington Feldman (1964). Importance of the test. Level of medical sales letters test-difficulty. Awareness of political science the.
performance of fellow. A certain expectation of. Overcrowded, great classes. Wish to help a friend. Aversion to teacher. At a closer examination of the reasons mentioned by these researchers it seems obvious that the strongest reasons are to be found among the personal factors and that the external factors merely help to ease the cheating. The external factors are furthermore a welcome excuse for the students, since they appear to medical cover letters prefer blaming external factors for science methodology, their behaviour (Baird, 1980). Anderman et al (1998) identified two general types of study approaches, which on a general level seem to be similar to the deep and surface approaches to studying and learning.
The cheaters tend to believe that the purpose of school is to compete and show how smart you are. Cover Letters! Also, to them, what is most important, is doing better than others and getting the right answer. They also worried about school and made use of self-handicapping behaviours, blaming others and making excuses for not performing well at school, more often than their counterparts. Many of them believed cheating would result in less homework and fewer academic demands. Phd Engineering Resume! The non-cheating group of students, in cover letters comparison, expressed interest in their learning of dr pepper essay science concepts and tried various problem-solving methods and sought to connect ideas. In several previous studies it is suggested that the effect of an letters explicit and unanimously accepted honour code will lower the frequency of cheating behaviour (McCabe Bowers, 1994). But honour code may have an effect in two opposite directions. A very common reason for some types of cheating is the wish to help a friend (Franklyn-Stokes and Newstead, 1995; McCabe Trevino, 1996). To many students some behaviours are not viewed as cheating although forbidden by the university or staff. For instance, letting a fellow student borrow or copy an b pro individual course work or a written assignment or even have a look at the answer in a test may be regarded as honest and correct behaviour. Thus, some cheating behaviours may be explained by the honour code prevalent among the students.
The most frequent reasons for medical cover, not cheating were, in the study made by Franklyn-Stokes and statement is, Newstead (1995) that it is immoral/dishonest and sales cover, that it is coursework useless/unimportant. In their study these were the most frequent reasons for not indulging in academic misconduct regardless of sex and age. In later studies (Newstead et al, 1995) there were, however, significant differences between the age groups: the older students gave the reason immoral more often than their younger peers did. The 160 subjects participating in the study were recruited from three different groups of students. In Table 3 below, the samples and some characteristics are presented. Table 3. Participants in the study.
The collection of data was carried out at the university during ordinary lecture time. The students were asked to letters complete a questionnaire consisting of dr pepper essay questions about cover cheating behaviours. The questionnaire was originally developed by Franklyn -Stokes and Newstead in the U.K. but adapted to meet the needs of the Swedish-speaking environment in Finland. In their questionnaire a set of probable cheating behaviours (A-U) were presented to the student, who was asked to tell (Yes or No) if he/she had carried out that behaviour at least once. Two additional items were included in dr pepper essay the questionnaire totalling the letters number of cheating behaviours presented to 23. Accompanying each question about cheating was a list of arguments (reasons) motivating or explaining the resume behaviour and medical sales, a list of arguments giving reasons for not cheating. The subjects were asked to select one reason for each Yes/No response. There was also a few additional questions asking about their reason to study at the university, their judgement of their study successfulness and about their belief about fellow students cheating.
The questionnaire was distributed to the students during ordinary lecture time at the university. The respondents completed it immediately and anonymously. Page! It took about 15 minutes to sales letters complete. The data was analysed by quantitative methods. 4. Phd Engineering Resume! The result of the data analysis. The overall frequency of cheating. 75 % of the respondents in medical cover letters this study had engaged in at least one of the behaviours listed in political methodology the questionnaire. However, only 63,5 % of them admit to cheating in the overall question at the end of the questionnaire, even though no less than 91,9% report that they believe their fellow students cheat. The over all tendency to medical letters cheat only correlated with year of study (Spearman#146;s rho= ,160, P=.046), reason to study (Spearman#146;s rho= ,213, p=.012) and the respondents#146; estimation of how much other students cheat (Spearman#146;s rho= ,159, p=.046). This seems to imply that the over all amount of cheating is relatively stable, but that the methods used vary depending on discipline of study, gender, age and success in studies, since there are some significant correlations for the individual items on the basis of these background variables.
This study was not designed to study the moral development of the respondents, but the results do, however, point in one certain direction as far as moral is concerned. In Table 4 below, the reported tendency to cheat is cross-tabulated with respondents#146; own evaluation of science dissertation their inclination to cheat. Table 4. Cross-tabulation of the variables reported tendency to cheat and own evaluation of cheating inclination. Of the ones who have reported that they never cheat 53,4 % have admitted to sales exercising at least one of the behaviours mentioned in dr pepper essay the questionnaire, whereas 12,9 % of the sales letters ones of the opinion that they cheat rarely have not reported cheating on any of the behaviours. A considerable amount of the students do seem to cheat, even though they do not always consider what they do as wrong, which makes it interesting to study how they do it and which behaviours are the most commonly used ones. Cheating methods used. In this section the occurrence of the page on courage different methods listed in medical the questionnaire are presented. Observe that the behaviours listed in on courage the questionnaire are various behaviours that can be regarded as cheating and medical sales, dishonest behaviour, but do not necessarily need to be considered as such (cf. the definition of cheating used in this paper).
Below, in Table 5 the students#146; responses to the behaviours described in the questionnaire are presented in order of frequency. The table also includes a classification of the behaviours as social/individual, and course-/exam-/research related, as well as the British results (Frankyn-Stokes Newstead, 1995). Table 5. Dr Pepper Essay! The cheating behaviours listed in order of frequency. The percentage of yes-answers to sales cover letters each cheating behaviour listed in order of frequency, starting with the most frequently used. The figure to five essay on courage the right is the percentage of positive answers received for the same item in the study made by Franklyn-Stokes Newstead (1995).The letters to the left represent the medical cover classification of the behaviour. E Portfolio! The letters stand for research (R), coursework (C), exam (E), and individual (I), social (S) and medical sales letters, altruistic (A). In Table 5 one can see that some cheating behaviours are more frequent than others are. The most frequent ones among the Finnish respondents are Copying material for course-work from b pro booklet, a book or other publication without acknowledging the medical sales source, Paraphrasing material from another source without acknowledging the original author, Allowing own course-work to be copied by dr pepper essay, another student, and Copying another student's course-work with their knowledge.
These behaviours are admitted by more than 20 percent of the participating students. As mentioned earlier, these behaviours may be considered as academic misconduct. All of them may, however, be viewed as acceptable and even morally correct among the students, since they do not have negative consequences for the fellow student but may be regarded as help and support in difficult situations. Sales Cover! In that sense it can be assumed that there exists a conflict between staff#146;s and students#146; social and ethical value systems, creating a moral borderline area where what is right and wrong are not easily delimited. From the bottom of the list we can observe that the least admitted behaviours are Inventing data (i.e. Political Methodology! entering non-existent results into the database)and Kept silent about a teacher's misbehaviour or misuse of his/her position in order to get approval on a test or a higher mark. These behaviours were reported only by one respondent/ behaviour. Medical! The general nature of these behaviours seems to be different from the dr pepper essay most frequent ones in medical sales cover that they are more directed to essay on courage personal gratification. The behaviours also represent more active deception of teachers and fellow students in order to gain personal reward. Medical Letters! It can be assumed that these behaviours are viewed as more morally disapprovable and of low peer esteem.
As also can be seen above, three of the behaviours do not occur at five essay on courage all in this study. This is probably due to the limited sample and perhaps also (judging from medical, cryptic comments of the respondents) to fear of punishment. The students#146; responses to five page on courage the items in the questionnaire depicting various cheating behaviours were in most cases similar for the both sexes; that is, there are almost no differences between female and male student#146;s responses in this respect. To two items, however, there were different reactions that are related to differences in sex. One of these items was Taking unauthorised material into an examination (e.g. #146;cribs#146;). Sales Cover! The outcome is b pro booklet presented in cover Table 6 below. Table 6 Relationship between students#146; responses to item Taking unauthorised material into an examination (e.g. Political Dissertation! #146;cribs#146;) and students#146; sex. The result in the table indicates that there are clear differences between female and male students#146; ways of responding to the item suggesting cheating in the form of taking unauthorised material in the testing situation. Among the female students only 2.6 percent admitted to the behaviour while 13.6 percent of the male students said #146;Yes#146; to having carried out the cheating. The differences are statistically significant (Fisher#146;s Exact Test, D.F.=1, p=.015).
The second item where there were observed statistically significant ( c 2 =5.82, D.F.=1, p=.016) response differences related to medical sales sex was the item Signing as present a not present fellow student at a course where obligatory attendance is asked for. This item was added to the original questionnaire. The outcome is presented in Table 7 below. Table 7. Relationship between students#146; responses to the item Signing as present a not present fellow student at a course where obligatory attendance is asked for and students#146; sex. As can be seen in the table more than 20 percent of the female students admitted that they had signed on a fellow student at a lecture although he/she was absent.
This can be compared with 4.5 percent of the male students admitting the same behaviour. Compared to the outcome in the previous table, there is a clear female dominance for this behaviour, while males more often than females answered Yes to the previous one. Science! Another difference is that the total proportion of Yes-responses are much larger for the item Signing as present a not present fellow student at a course, where obligatory attendance is asked for when compared with students#146; Yes-responses to the item Taking unauthorised material into an examination (e.g. #146;cribs#146;) (se Table 6 above), showing the response variation between the items regarding the tendency among the students to accept or not accept a specific cheating behaviour. The social #150;individual relation. In the sales cover following, the phd engineering frequency of medical cover letters certain cheating behaviours are discussed in relation to the nature (see classification in Table 5 above) of the behaviour. 14 of the behaviours in this study were clearly classified as individual and 5 as social. The mean for yes-responses was 14,4 % for dr pepper essay, the social behaviours and 10,5 % for the individual ones. As for situation relatedness, the five most frequently used behaviours were clearly course related. The study only contained one item concerning research related cheating (R), and this was the medical cover ninth in order of frequency (10,8 %) and had mostly been used by male respondents at page essay on courage the age of 21-23 successfully (16-24.99 credits/term) studying education . Sales Letters! Exam related cheating was not among the on courage most commonly used cheating methods, but 13,8 % of the respondents still admit using the most frequent of these behaviours.
The clearly altruistic behaviours A and S were used to a greater extent by letters, female respondents (A: 27,4 % and S: 8,8 %) than by men (A: 16,7 % and S: 2,3 %, even though the reasons given for exercising this behaviour are not clearly altruistic. Reasons for cheating. Another area of five interest to us concerns the reasons and the arguments selected as explanations and sometimes also as excuses for the behaviour. In Table 8 below all the letters reasons used to motivate cheating are listed in five page order of frequency. It should be remembered that the reasons available to be selected were generated by the researchers, but that the letters respondents also were given the possibility to express other reasons/motives.
These less frequent reasons are also listed in Table 8. Regarding reasons given for not cheating the phd engineering resume most frequent one (27.5 %) is the choice stating that cheating is immoral or dishonest. The reasons following in frequency of appearance represent on medical sales cover a general level a completely different class of attitudes, since it may mean that the subject do not distance him/herself from dr pepper essay, cheating, only that it was not considered or regarded as useful (I never thought of it, 21.3 % and medical cover letters, Situation did not arise, 19.5 %). In the dr pepper essay lower frequency range two reasons mirroring fear of detection and getting caught are found; Shame/embarrassment at being caught (1.3 %) and Fear of detection/punishment (1.4 %). In a way these reasons like the two previous ones are focusing the social condemnation for cheating and medical, dishonest behaviour and are not clearly a statement against cheating. When looking at students#146; ways of choosing reasons for cheating or for not cheating there seems to exist a strong connection with the cheating behaviour that is in coursework b pro forma focus. This means that the choice of reason is to a large extent dependent on the particular behaviour that have been admitted to or not admitted to. This topic will be discussed no further in medical sales this paper. In most cases, however, there are no obvious differences between female and dr pepper essay, male students#146; ways of selecting their reasons for their responses. Medical Sales Letters! Depending on what cheating behaviour is to be decided on, female and male students mostly make similar choices of arguments for their behaviour. In two cases, however, there exist statistical significant differences between the two sexes in ways of explaining the behaviour.
The reasons chosen as an explanation or an argument for or against the behaviour Taking unauthorised material into an examination (e.g. 'cribs') are different between female and male students. In the table below the outcome is a thesis statement is presented. Table 10. Reasons for or against the cheating behaviour Taking unauthorised material into an examination (e.g. 'cribs')among female and male students. The outcome points to sales statistical significant differences (Phi and Cram?r#146;s V =.404, p=.048) between the female and male ways of selecting the reason for their behaviour regarding Taking unauthorised material into an examination (e.g. 'cribs'). Dr Pepper Essay! First of all 7.1 percent of the boys have selected Fear of failure as a reason for this cheating behaviour while no girl have selected that reason. Also It would be unfair to other students were chosen by 4.8 male students but not one female student.
Among the female students reasons like To increase the sales mark, Laziness, I would not know how to science dissertation go about medical cover letters it and Situation did not arise/not applicable to e portfolio my course were chosen by a few female students but no male student. A relatively large difference between female and male ways of choosing among the reasons for explaining the Yes/No-answer can be found for medical cover, reason I never thought about it, where 20.5 percent of the female students selected that reason while it attracted only 14.3 percent of the e portfolio resume male students. Also It would devalue my achievement was chosen by a larger proportion female students (8.0 %) than male students (2.4 %). The second statistical significant difference (Phi and Cram?r#146;s V=.348, p=.028) concerns the reasons chosen for item Taking an examination for someone else or having someone else take an examination for you. The outcome is cover letters presented in Table 11 below.
Table 11. Reasons for or against the cheating behaviour Taking an examination for someone else or having someone else take an examination for you. among female and male students. In one case the male students have chosen a reason (Shame/embarrassment at being caught) that is statement is not chosen by any female student. Large difference on the basis of sex are found for the reason Situation did not arise/not applicable to my course, where more than 16 percent more boys have chosen that reasons for their behaviour. Two female students selected one reason that the male students did not choose, namely Fear of detection/punishment. Largest difference (18.7 percent) to the male students are found for reason I never thought of it, which was chosen by medical sales cover letters, 33.0 percent of the political science female students but only 14.3 percent of the male students. Various methodological problems that have been discussed elsewhere (see Bj?rklund, 1997), are not mentioned here, since they do not seem to affect the reliability and validity of the results discussed. There is, however, one point of importance as far as methodological bias is concerned and that is the fact that the instrument in this study was translated from English and a British context, which in some cases have called for adjustment and in cover one case yielded an erroneous translation (item L). The frequency of individual cheating behaviours in comparison to the British results. The over all frequency of cheating reported in phd engineering this study does not differ significantly from the ones reported by previous researchers, and can, hence, be taken as a further proof of the fact that the over all cheating rates seem to be fairly constant in the western word. What is more interesting is the variation in sales frequency on dr pepper essay individual behaviours.
The most outstanding feature when comparing the frequencies reported by the Finnish respondents with the ones reported by the British, is that in most cases the medical sales cover British respondents have reported remarkably higher degree of cheating. Page Essay On Courage! The greatest variation is to sales cover be found in items I (peer assessment), L (inventing data) , R (altering data) and A (allow copying of coursework). The great difference concerning peer assessment is probably due to differences in dissertation the academic traditions: Peer assessment is not very common in the Swedish #150;speaking university level studies in Finland. Item L does not represent a real difference, since the sales cover item was erroneously translated into Swedish and , thus, measures something else. E Portfolio! Research related cheating seem to be much more common in Britain, but the result might in medical sales cover this case be biased for faculty, since the studies were not conducted at the same kinds of institutions. Item A, concerning course work, is the top one of phd engineering resume many items concerning coursework that exhibit considerable higher frequencies for the British respondents, which is probably due to the same kind/s of cultural differences as mentioned regarding item I. Only on item K (advance information about exam) was the result of the Finnish respondents higher than the result of the British. The items concerning examrelated behaviours generally exhibit the smallest differences between the groups, which seems to indicate that exam conditions are more or less alike between the two countries. It is also possible to claim that the medical sales cover letters results indicate that Finnish students seem to find examrelated cheating less serious than British, who , in turn, do not seem to five regard research related cheating as particularly serious. In the Finnish results the social behaviours seem to be slightly more common, whereas the individual behaviours get a higher mean score in the British results (social 24 %, individual 20,8 %).
This can be seen claimed to indicate that the British academic environment is more competitive than the Finnish, but it ought to be remembered that the mean score used here is medical sales a very crude measure. Reasons for a thesis is, cheating in comparison to the British results. The most frequent reasons for cheating mentioned by the Finnish students were time pressure, laziness and medical sales, the wish to help a friend. The wish to help a friend and time pressure are also two of the three most frequent reasons mentioned by the British students, but they have mentioned the wish to increase the e portfolio resume mark as the medical sales cover most frequent reason for cheating. Concerning this reason the difference between the two samples is remarkable (Finnish students 9,3 % and British students 33,3 %). Finns on dr pepper essay the other hand contribute their cheating to laziness and extenuating circumstances considerably more often than their British peers, who, in medical cover letters turn, seem to fear failure more and resume, also tend to justify their behaviour with the reason everybody does it. Out of these differences it is medical letters easy to create caricature image of the cheating British student as an ambitious person , who wishes to perform well and of the Finnish student who mainly cheats because it seems to be the easiest way to go about the studies. Considering the reasons for not cheating the British students seem to have two main reasons, which are used considerably more often than the other ones available; That it would have been pointless/unnecessary and that it would have been immoral/dishonest. The immorality aspect is mentioned as the most frequently used among the Finnish students, but the second most frequently used is that the e portfolio student never thought of it, closely followed by the reason that the medical cover situation didn#146;t arise or wasn#146;t applicable. Again, then , the British students seem to be more focused on the outcome/the result of the a thesis is cheating behaviour than the Finnish ones.
Even though morality is one of the medical sales cover letters most frequently used reasons for not cheating in both of the groups, the potential cheater-reasons, i.e. the ones giving I never thought of it, the situation didn#146;t arise and/or it was unnecessary/pointless, amount to about 50 % in both of the groups. In connection to the fact that the reasons shame /embarrassment at being caught (1,3 % of Finnish answers, 0 % of British ones) and fear of detection/punishment (1,9 % of Finnish answers and 5,8 % of British ones) were used quite infrequently, this implicates that it is of the utmost importance to reduce the opportunities of successful cheating, e.g. by page essay on courage, creating individual exams and sales letters, other assessment tasks that demand creativity and originality, not just reproduction. The fact that embarrassment is a thesis is such an infrequent reason also implicates that nether British or Finnish students feel responsible for the code of honour of their academic institutions. Hence, by letters, establishing a functioning code of honour one could most likely reduce the a thesis statement is instances of cheating remarkably, since the socio-moral climate is known to affect the medical behaviour of students more effectively than their own level of moral development (MacCabe Trevino, 1996). The reduction of opportunities for successful cheating is, of course, the most immediate way of reducing cheating, but in the long run that measure will not suffice.
According to the findings in this study and other ones (cf. Davis et al, 1992) , there is a gap between the notions of morality and correctness as withheld by society and university staff and the notions of these phenomena withheld by the students. It is e portfolio resume therefore necessary to spell out which the medical sales letters common rules are and also control that they are followed. To go even further it is also important to stress the importance of moral education for moral development in order to secure a functioning society, presuming that that is what is what is wanted. Variations in science dissertation methodology cheating behaviour on the basis of the back ground variables. Contrary to medical letters previous research very few of the background variables seem to affect the tendency to cheat to a significant extent. This was, however, also the science methodology case for sales cover letters, Haines et al (1986, in Davis et al, 1992). They came to the conclusion that it was because of the unproportionality concerning sex and year of study in the sample, which also seems to science dissertation methodology be the case in this study. Except the gender differences on some items, mentioned in the results, there were, however, also weak, but statistically significant positive correlations between the overall tendency to cheat and year of study, the perception of how much other students cheat and reason for studying. This result implies that academic misconduct, at least to some extent, may be epidemic and sales letters, that students#146; reasons for not cheating are gradually worn down when they see fellow students cheat, without being caught.
The reason for studying is also of considerable importance, when discussing cheating rates. An obvious way of reducing cheating in dr pepper essay our faculties would be to ensure that only intrinsically motivated students are accepted. The question is then: How do we control for that, and do we really want to; It is medical all linked to the kind of professionals we want to educate. Summary of implications. Academic staff can no longer presuppose that students know and behave according to coursework unwritten moral rules or an inner code of honour. One, obvious way of reducing cheating in universities is then to medical sales spell out what rules and codes the students are subjected to. Such a document ought, however, to be carefully thought out and produced in co-operation with the students, in a thesis statement order to sales letters establish it as a code of honor2, otherwise it will only fill the purpose of a list of potentially successful cheating behaviours.
According to dr pepper essay previous research, students#146; moral behaviour and ethical reasoning seems to develop under continuous education. I am convinced that this influence can be made stronger through focused attention to medical sales the area and an open ethical dialogue, not in any specific course, but as every teacher#146;s concern. This would create a good socio-moral environment for moral development, which is what universities ought to foster in their students, since that is something they will need in their everyday life as well as in their professional activities, and of which society will benefit or suffer in the long run. Even though the personal factors causing or preventing cheating are probably the primary ones, it is is also a good idea to try to reduce or eliminate the external factors that seem to cause cheating. One of the major external reasons for cheating was time pressure. That ought to be quite easily remedied through courses/ supervision in studying technique and discipline, as well as a better co-ordination of courses and exams between university staff. It is also up to the staff to really check that the rules they give are followed. Such a behaviour signals that the sales cover rules are judged as important and political methodology, might awaken conscience in the students, or at medical sales letters least make the cheating alternative less attractive and easy to carry out.
In this case it is, in fact, most important to catch the small fish. Davis and Ludvigson in turn present a twofold way of reducing cheating in the long run, namely by dr pepper essay, a) using positive reinforcement and b) by encouraging and fostering the students to acquire an sales cover outlook on life that will prevent them from cheating. The results of science dissertation this study are particularly serious from a societal point of sales cover view, since it involved future teachers, theologian and economists. What kind of dr pepper essay teachers does the society of today want? Is it possible for a teacher who does not regard cheating as wrong to teach pupils high ethical and moral standards? Or should the medical sales cover comprehensive school only strive to teach knowledge and skills? The compulsory schoolteachers are of e portfolio resume strategic importance, since they are the ones who ought to start the sales process of moral development, if academic freedom is to be a reality in the future. Lax morality among economists and teologians is, however, no less serious than among teachers. Political Methodology! If those particular groups in society are not to sales be trusted, then who? In the long run that will produce an even greater disbelief in authorities, eventually resulting in community breakdown. In order to be able to deal with the problem in an efficient manner it is necessary to reach the causative factors, which probably are best reached with a flexible and qualitative approach.
To understand delicate and inaccessible phenomena like the one at hand it is important to statement benefit from as many sources of knowledge as possible; an interdisciplinary approach would probably be most adequate. It is medical cover also important to realise the problem with truthfulness. In this study it was generally found that the students tended to page essay on courage answer the sales cover letters questionnaire with less anxiety, when it was stressed that the researcher was a fellow student and methodology, not a member of the university staff.
